The Bust of Spurius Genucius Rutilus

The Bust of Spurius Genucius Rutilus

During one of our SCA demos at a local science fiction/comic convention, Hal-Con, in 2018, we found a vendor that could make 3D copies of you.  Spurius being the Roman that he is, he absolutely HAD to have one done, so that he could have himself immortalized in a bust.  He asked the vendor to make the biggest one he could.  You can actually see the bust featured in the gallery on the web page of the maker:  https://3dmenow.ca/gallery

Here are a couple of photos of Spurius sitting in a very stoic pose in order to have his portrait captured into a 3D image:

Considering that Spurius did not trust himself to make it look good, the painting was my job!

I used regular acrylic craft paint.

I started by painting various layers to produce a skin colour:

I then added the facial features and hair:

Finally the armour and clothing:

Spurius himself learned how to do some wood-turning from Sir Gareth Grey de Wilton and was able to make the stand himself.  Once it was mounted, the bust was given a finishing matte spray to set the paint.

And voila!  Spurius Genucius Rutilus immortalized for all time!  That's not disturbing at all!

The original unveiling was going to be at a Roman 12th Night event that Spurius and I were running in early 2019.  As it happened, however, Spurius was to be knighted at the East Kingdom Twelfth Night event in Quebec a couple of weeks ahead.  He brought the bust with him hoping to show it off to friends, but he had no idea he was being knighted and it ended up being part of the decorations for his vigil tent!  And then it proudly sat on our feast table that evening!
